Extension and Finissage of the exhibition „Vorsicht Glas! Fragile Art 700-2010“
Berlin, Museum of Islamic Art at the Pergamonmuseum
10. September 2010 – 13. February 2011

Due to large visitor interest, the exhibition „Vorsicht Glas! Fragile Art 700-2010“ may still be seen until 13 February 2011.
A finissage will take place on 10 February. On this occasion the Turkish glass artist Felekşan Onar will give a lecture on her works. The following reception will be accompanied by music of Stefan Lischewski.

Exhibition
The show, which opened in September 2010, is dedicated to 1400 years of creativity and design of glass from the Middle East. Arranged into five topics – colour, transparency, lustre, fragility and decoration – the 61 glasses from the collection at the Museum of Islamic Art are displayed in an axis. They are encircled by eight contemporary glass sculptures from the Berlin gallery New Glass Art & Photography. The glasses are displayed in illuminated showcases, giving the illusion that the objects are floating on a sea of light.
The exhibition offers the public a fascinating view of the glass collection at the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin. Well-known pieces from the permanent collection are presented in a new light. However, the majority of the glasses have either never been displayed, or only seldom been seen. The high quality of glasses are to be admired, from mass produced, functional objects to luxurious wares commissioned by the elite.
Artists from Lebanon and Turkey show us that glass is used in contemporary art. Juxtaposed to these works are sculptures by North American and Australian artists who have been influenced by their travels in the Near East.
